Toxoplasmosis in European brown hares

A new study published in the European Journal of Wildlife Research has reported the first fatal cases of toxoplasmosis in European brown hares in southern Europe, specifically Catalonia. Two hares showed severe organ damage despite appearing healthy, and genetic testing confirmed infection with a type II T. gondii strain, a parasite that can infect nearly all mammal including humans. A wider serosurvey from 231 hares revealed a low exposure rate (1.73%), suggesting rare but potentially deadly infections. This finding concerns not only hare conservation but also public health in rural areas.
