Subclinical nature of PCV3 in wild boar

A new study developed in collaboration with CReSA-IRTA offers fresh insights into the behavior of Porcine circovirus 3 (PCV3) in wild boar populations. While PCV3 has been linked to reproductive and systemic diseases in domestic pigs, its pathogenic role in wild boar has remained unclear—until now. Researchers analyzed 101 wild boars from Catalonia, Spain, and detected PCV3 genomes in nearly 30% of serum samples. Despite this high prevalence, none of the animals exhibited the characteristic lesions—such as systemic lymphohistiocytic periarteritis—typically associated with PCV3-associated disease (PCV3-AD). Even detailed tissue assessments revealed no signs of systemic inflammation or histopathological damage. The absence of disease in PCV3-positive wild boar may reflect key ecological or epidemiological differences compared to domesticated swine, including variations in viral exposure, immune response, or infection timing during gestation.

These findings indicate that wild boar may act as reservoirs for PCV3, but the virus appears to have limited or no clinical impact on their health. This study represents a significant step forward in understanding the complex dynamics of emerging swine pathogens in wildlife populations.
