A recent study published in Parasitology about a molecular survey of Trypanosoma pestanai in badgers from the northern Iberian Peninsula reported a prevalence of 35%, in line with values reported in other European populations. Badgers from the Eurosiberian bioregion of Spain (42% prevalence) were more parasitized than their Mediterranean counterparts (19% prevalence), suggesting that more humid conditions could favor Trypanosoma persistence through host behavior or vector dynamics.
