A novel herpesvirus, Ranid herpesvirus 5 (RaHV5), has been identified in wild Iberian painted frogs in Spain, linked to unusual skin lesions. This marks the third herpesvirus affecting amphibians in Europe in under a decade, raising serious conservation concerns. The discovery was led by the WEH-SEFaS group in collaboration with CSIC-University of Oviedo, AHE, CRARC, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, the Institute of Virology and Immunology (Switzerland), and the University of Messina—showcasing the power of international teamwork in tackling emerging wildlife health threats.
