Epizootic haemorrhagic disease virus serotype 8 (EHDV-8) emerged in Europe in 2022, causing widespread outbreaks in domestic and wild ruminants. In our latest publication in Veterinary Research, we provide the first comprehensive description of the clinical signs, pathology and tissue distribution of EHDV-8 in naturally infected red deer. Red deer are highly susceptible to EHDV-8, developing severe neurological, respiratory and vascular lesions that frequently lead to death. Our findings identify the brain, lungs and kidneys as the most severely affected organs and reveal the main target cells.

This work represents a step towards advancing our understanding of the impact of emerging vector-borne diseases on European wild ungulate populations.
