The Wildlife Ecology and Health (WE&H) Group has recently initiated a collaboration with the Genetic Laboratory of the Guardia Civil in Spain to combat the poaching of game ungulates. This partnership aims to strengthen conservation efforts by using genetic analysis to track and identify illegally hunted animals. As part of the collaboration, the WE&H Group has provided muscle samples from the main Iberian ungulate species, including red deer, roe deer, fallow deer, Iberian ibex, Southern chamois and Aoudad. These samples will be analyzed to create genetic profiles, which can then be compared against seized meat from poachers. The integration of genetic tools into wildlife law enforcement will enhance the ability to trace poaching activities and help preserve these species, contributing to more effective conservation strategies in Spain.
