For the first time, ha-MYXV, a recombinant Myxoma virus strain, has been detected in European hares in Spain. Previously affecting rabbits and Iberian hares, this virus’s species jump raises concerns about potential outbreaks. While infections remain rare (1.8% prevalence), European hares may lack immunity, making them vulnerable. Transmission likely occurs through insect vectors or contact with infected rabbits. This finding highlights the urgent need for enhanced disease surveillance and wildlife conservation efforts to monitor the virus’s spread and its possible impact on hare populations.
